An ‘open checkbook’ approach

checking Many government entities and other public establishments are putting their checkbooks online for public scrutiny. For example, Grand Rapids has just started doing this:

City Manager Greg Sundstrom said the city [Grand Rapids] is opening up its checkbook. A record of all accounts payable checks issued by the city now will be trackable online, going back to March 3.  MLive

Grand Rapids updates the online file after each City Commission meeting.

We should consider doing this locally. Our citizens want to know more about where government money is being spent.

Now that bank records are electronic, converting a checkbook statement for online display is neither difficult nor costly. And I suspect that it could be done automatically, so that little clerical time is involved.
