Tonight I attended a special meeting of the Elk Rapids School Board. The entire discussion was about what to do about an estimated $900,000 loss of revenue for the schools. Superintendent Steve Prissel also attended the meeting. Many administrators, employees and concerned citizens filled Room 124 at the High School.
Business Manager Jeff Scroggins provided a wealth of statistics on payroll, services and many other budgetary matters. Some areas discussed were marketing, busing, healthcare costs and salaries/benefits. Citizen comments were many, including some who told why they chose to move here and enroll their children in our schools. School administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals also spoke.
I was struck by the politeness and civility of the meeting, in spite of the dire revenue predictions and potentially ominous consequences. Many helpful comments dealt with how to increase revenue as well as how and what to cut. All in all, it was a very helpful meeting. The next meeting in the series will be held on May 17.
Reminder: School board election is tomorrow. Be sure to vote.
