Memorandum of Understanding

USCGTribe1transToday I was privileged to attend a remarkable and memorable event at the Eagle Ridge Conference Center in Peshawbestown: a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States Coast Guard Ninth District and the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

After a welcome by Commander Jonathan Spaner, emcee of the event, a Grand Entry commenced by a combined color guard of Eagleton American Legion Post 120 and the U.S. Coast Guard, which was followed by the Medicine Lodge Singers rendition of the Flag Song and then the National Anthem.

Following an invocation by Eagleton Post Commander Jack Swanson, several other distinguished guests gave remarks that were filled with numerous expressions of mutual respect and admiration:

  • Tribe3Rear Admiral Michael Parks, USCG
  • GTB Tribal Chairman Derek Bailey
  • GTB Chief Game Warden William Bailey
  • State Senator Howard Walker
  • State Representative Wayne Schmidt
  • Director of Military and Veterans Affairs Jason Allen
  • Chairman of Leelanau County Board of Commissioners Tom Van Pelt

Tribe2Rear Admiral Parks and Chairman Bailey then signed the memorandum, followed by the Honor Song, performed by the Medicine Lodge Singers. Gifts were exchanged, and guests enjoyed a sumptuous meal, compliments of the Grand Traverse Band. The program featured the following thank you:

The United States Coast Guard and the Grand Traverse Band would like to say Chi-Megwetch [thank you] to the Tribal Membership, Coast Guard family and the surrounding community for your continued support and encouragement.

A powerful and meaningful community event.
