About 150 people came to the Taste of Germany celebration and enjoyed a wonderful, authentic German meal prepared by Chefs Shannon and Ron Schmidt and served by our high school German exchange students and members of the Stoldts family, who located here from Germany a few years ago. The Bavarian Bakery delighted customers with a wide array of pastries and fresh made breads provided by the Elk Rapids Sweet Shop, Great Lakes Culinary as well as Cherryland Middle School students and families.
In addition to the great food, guests were treated to German music performed by the Cherryland Middle School band, polka dancing and presentations about Germany. Students displayed reports on the history, art and architecture and important people of Germany. These displays were enhanced with products provided by area businesses showcasing what Germany brings to consumers today.
“These mini-immersions into other cultures are critical for our students,” commented Sarah Pierson, IB Coordinator, “They will be entering a global economy, working face to face and/or virtually with people from all over the world. Gaining understanding and acceptance of cultural differences will be so important to their future success as global citizens. We hope to continue these types of events not only for the educational value for our students but also because it brings together so many in our community. It is a wonderful bridge between generations, among community members and across nations.”
